Reasons Why A Basement Can Leak in the Greater Philadelphia Area

If you know what causes the leak you will also know how to prevent it from the beginning. There are generally five reasons why a basement leaks.

Reasons Why A Basement Can Leak
  • Hydrostatic Pressure: During heavy rain or melting snow, ground absorbs water. When the soil is saturated, it cannot absorb any more water, causing hydrostatic pressure (the pressure created by water within the soil beneath your foundation). It occurs when water gets trapped under the concrete floor with nowhere else to go. As a result, water leaks through the foundation walls and floor.
  • Lateral Pressure: As, while building your house the soil gets excavated and filled back in later on. The looser the soil is the greater amount of water it absorbs and the more water is absorbed the more the soil expands. After heavy rain, this expansion of soil creates pressure against the foundation from the sides, causing cracks in your wall and resulting in water leaking into your basement.
  • Faulty Plumbing: Water can leak into your basement if any pipe is leaky inside your home. A leaky pipe may also lead to pipes bursting and ultimately a flood in your basement.
  • Window Well: Window wells are common causes of basement leaks. If the window is not installed properly or doesn’t have proper drainage, or the drain is blocked or clogged by debris; rainwater accumulates within the well and builds pressure on the window and window seals. Eventually, the window seal fails and water seeps through. Cracks and gaps around the window can also cause water leaking into your basement.
  • Malfunction of a Sump Pump: A sump pump is an essential piece of your basement waterproofing system designed to pump away water from under the basement floor and foundation. But, if it’s not cleaned regularly or properly maintained, it can fail, causing water to get into your basement.
